The state of being poor can be ascertained by a situation whereby one is unable to provide for his basic necessities of life such as: food, clothing, shelter, medicare, basic education etc. It is not enough to chorus Article 25 of the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights that ‘everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, and housing...' More than other threats, poverty has proved to be the greatest threat to the continued existence of mankind. Quite a number of people are presently poor in all continents of the world; about 57% of the Sub-Saharan African populations live below poverty line. This is followed by Asia, especially India with poor people totaling about 410 million.
The manner in which the issue is being tackled raises the question of whether poverty is really the share of all people. Where are the private sectors? What is the scorecard of the fight? These issues and more need to be seriously addressed. This paper shall attempt to do so. Pragmatic ways out will equally be proffered for a better, healthier and more productive global family.
