REPORT OF THE 4TH NIGERIAN CLIENT INTERVIEWING AND
COUNSELLING SKILLS COMPETITION ORGANISED BY NETWORK OF
UNIVERSITY LEGAL AID INSTITUTIONS (NULAI) IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
MACARTHUR FOUNDATION AND HELD AT THE FACULTY OF LAW,
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, ENUGU CAMPUS ON NOVEMBER 28 & 29, 2008.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION

The competition is aimed at promoting greater knowledge and interest among Law
Students and Lawyers in developing interviewing, planning, analytical and preventive
(ADR) skills in the Lawyer-Client relationship in office. The competition serves as an
advocacy platform for promoting clinical legal education and access to justice and
provides an opportunity for valuable educational and cultural interchange amongst
students, law teachers and legal practitioners.

(1) O P E N I N G - DAY TWO - 28th NOVEMBER, 2008.
The programme started with registration as scheduled. This was followed with the introduction of guests and other important personalities among whom were Dr. (Mrs.) Enemo, Dean of Law, University of Nigeria; Prof Charles U. Ilegbune, the Dean of Law, University of Abuja; Prof Ernest Ojukwu, the Deputy Director-General of the Nigerian Law School and Head, Enugu Campus who is also the President of NULAI Nigeria; Mr Godwin Odo, the Programme Director, MacAuthor Foundation, Abuja; Hon. Justice Obieze and Hon. Justice K. M. Ude, both of the Enugu State Judiciary.
After the opening prayer, welcome remarks were presented by Dr (Mrs.) Enemo, the Dean of Law, University of Nigeria; and Mr. Godwin Odo, the Programme Director, MacAthur Foundation, Abuja. The President of NULAI Nigeria, Prof Ernest Ojukwu, after his speech, then recognized the previous winners of the competitions- Miss Adamu Jumai Shukrat, (2nd NCCC) who made a First Class in the Nigerian Law School Bar Examination in 2008; Miss Omotayo Folasade Awomolo and Rodney Adzuanaga Aondofa (3rd NCCC). He also called out for recognition the participating students and Universities.

Enugu State University of Science and Technology participated as observers.
2. DRAWS/GROUPING OF PARTICIPANTS/ JUDGES/CLIENTS
Draws were made for the participating teams using ballots. Judges and clients were then assigned to competition rooms. Three Judges were assigned to each room and they were seven rooms with two teams competing in each room except one group where three teams competed.

3. BRIFING OF JUDGES AND CLIENTS
Judges and clients were briefed separately.

4. SYMPOSIUM - OUR LEARNING STYLES
The president of NULAI Nigeria, Ernest Ojukwu presented symposium on learning styles using VARK.

K -- Kinesthetic
Participants completed VARK forms and the result showed that more participants were K inclined followed by R participants. The symposium result and discussion showed that more participants preferred learning by experience. Participants were briefed on how to use the VARK test to improve on their learning ability depending on their learning styles inclinations.

2. SEMI FINALS
After the Second Round, the following Institutions qualified for semifinals:
University of Uyo, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) IFe, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, University of Abuja, Abia State University, Uturu, While Nigerian Law School, Kano Campus and Nigerian Law School, Enugu Campus drew with 9 point each. To determine who qualified among the two drawing institutions, a lucky dip was conducted with Nigerian Law School, Kano Campus succeeding by picking letter “S” meaning “Semi Final”.

The Result of Semi Final showed three Universities emerging for the finals as follows: Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus and University of Uyo.
The final competitions were conducted in the auditorium for all participants to watch. At the end of the teams interviews, the result was polled by five Judges as follows:
Obafemi Awolowo University - First possition with 7 points
University of Uyo - Second possiton with 10 points
University of Nigeria - Third Possition with 13 points.
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, was therefore declared winners of the 4th NCCC; University of Uyo was runner-up.

3. CLOSING
Before the final result was announced, Dr Mrs Enemo, Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria gave a vote of thanks. The judges also made their respective remarks.
The competition ended with a dinner at Bayview Hotel and Resorts during which time Certificates were issued to participants. There were over 50 participants and observers at the competition.
