African students [in India] vow to do their bit after racist attacks
Hyginus Uchenna Okoronkwo, a PhD student from Nigeria, said people often think Africans come to India for drug or human trafficking. "We come here for better opportunities because we think India is more advanced and promising than our countries. Some of the people in Africa have seen more violence in our lifetime than anyone else. Why would we come to India and do something after which we have to turn away? There are criminal elements in every society and it is up to the police to identify them. We are willing to help the police in this," he said, adding, "I want to call India a home away from home. For this, I need to be accepted by the people here." But life in India is full of challenges-from landlords who refuse to rent out properties or charge double rents to a stiff language barrier.
